Morgan Hale is an artist and weaver based in New York City. Her work gathers at the intersection of art, craft, and design. The process of floor loom weaving is a driving force behind her practice. A building of warp and weft creates an inherent grid structure. Sometimes, she moves with this grid; other times, she distorts it. The methodical, slow craft of weaving and a desire for precision shape her work. Morgan is drawn to structured materials that oppose the traditional softness of textiles and blend into the realm of sculpture. She mainly works with natural materials like paper yarn and linen, which are both durable yet delicate in appearance. The airy weave structure adds to their ethereal look, allowing light and shadow to interact with the pieces. Although weaving is the axis of her work, experimentation with further techniques like cyanotype, dyeing, papermaking and smocking plays an important role. Through her process-driven practice, Morgan works to intentionally reflect the passing of time, perception, and memory.
Morgan has been weaving since 2012 and holds a BFA in Fibers, from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She is the author of Weaving Untangled, an illustrated beginner’s weaving guide that covers tools, creating a warp, loom set up, how to read a pattern draft, weaving tips, finishing techniques, resources, a selection of pattern drafts, and a project planning section.
